Whipps Cross Hospital - Development
WHIPPS CROSS HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT UPDATE. 9 FEBRUARY 2025.
In July 2024 the government announced that as that as part of a wider audit of public spending, a review of the National New Hospital Programme would take place. The report concludes that Whipps Cross Hospital (WXH) would be in Wave 2 meaning an expectation that construction would commence between 2030 and 2035. As a reminder, the proposed new hospital would be ten storeys high with two thirds of the site (44 acres) being sold off to Waltham Forest for some 1500 high rise flats, up to 18 storeys high, landlocked and with no parking. This would of course visually swamp the surrounding houses and other land. Whether WXH would ever make it as a priority on ‘Wave 2’, given the hospital does function, and is less of a problem than other hospitals in poorer shape - e.g. with autoclaved concrete roofs.
The Broadway
Roof tiles falling from above Sainsbury’s , update 16 february 2025
A resident reported a dangerous structure in Woodford Broadway (Loose masonry and hanging tiles), above Feelings (Post Office) to the out of hours telephone contact number on the Redbridge council website. They were provided with a reference number and took the name of the person they spoke to.
After four weeks, the resident telephoned Building Control to seek an update on the situation. A building control officer returned the call the same day, advising that notice had been served on the owner of the property, requiring the structure to be made safe within 30 days.
Four weeks later the resident contacted Redbridge Building Control, using the e-mail address to ask for a further update. The following day the Building Control Officer called to advise that the previous night, contractors on behalf of Redbridge council had undertaken remedial work to make the building safe. The cost of this work, would be invoiced to the owner. A member of the WGAG Committee had seen the Building Control Officer the previous day taking photographs of the structure, they spoke to them and were provided a similar update on the situation.
Whilst the building has not been returned to its former glory, it is considered safe for those using our local shops, in particular the Feelings Post Office, which is directly below.
If you see a dangerous building, use the contact number or e-mail address on either the Redbridge Council website or link on the WGAG website to report it. Please also get a reference number and the name of the person you speak to, it aids Building Control if any follow up is required. It is also helpful share the detail of the building i.e. location, address. The Building Control Officer advised this resident -we take all reports of dangerous structures seriously and appreciate concerned residents reporting them to us.
